Women pay more than men for divorce

Divorce is a more costly process for women than it is for men, new research indicates

Divorce is a more costly process for women than it is for men, new research indicates.

According to a study conducted by the Fawcett Society, divorced and separated men are able to pay around £150 a month into a savings account and a pension scheme, whereas women can only pay £100.

In addition, separated men are more likely to be part of a pension scheme (72 per cent) than their female counterparts (68 per cent) or single people (54 per cent).

It also takes five years for a man to recover his level of saving so that it is the same as when he was married, while it takes women twice as long to do this.

Katherine Rake, the society's director, said: "Where money is concerned, there is still a big divide."

The study also found that single mums are the most likely to fall behind with bill payments.
