Whole school witnesses teacher's proposal

An American teacher has proposed to his girlfriend in front of an entire school during an assembly, the Rome News Tribune reports.

Jason Turner, a geography teacher at Darlington Upper School, South Carolina, wore a tuxedo for the proposal and popped the question after his partner and co-worker received a sporting accolade at the event.

But his fiancee Rachel Rice, a Spanish teacher at the school, almost missed the marriage proposal because she was trying to avoid attending assembly!

He told the paper: "I was trying to think of a way to do it that honours who we are and how we got here and we met at Darlington and we teach here, so this place is special to us."

Ms Rice said: "I had no idea he was going to propose to me there, so I was trying to get out of going to assembly so I could go to my other job at River City Bank."

She was given a ring for her achievements as coach of the school's tennis team, and following the presentation Turner walked onto the stage in the assembly hall and popped the question.

The couple have yet to decide where or when to get married, but have discussed holding their wedding in Darlington chapel.
