An increasing number of married couples in Germany are choosing to forgo the exchange of wedding rings when they become husband and wife, a new study indicates.
According to research conducted by the Allensbach polling institute, the high rate of divorce in the country is convincing many people that there isn't much point having the symbolic bands, as they might one day separate from their partner and no longer need them.
The study shows that 60 per cent of husbands and 74 per cent of wives wear a wedding ring and that divorced people are less inclined to buy such a jewellery item for a new spouse.
It was found that 88 per cent of men aged 29 or under would happily buy and wear a wedding ring, but those who have gone through a divorce are much less likely to do so. Around 50 per cent of grooms in the 45 to 59 age group wear a wedding ring.
