The wedding ring that was lost and found

For those who are happily married, a wedding ring is a symbol of everlasting love and commitment

For those who are happily married, a wedding ring is a symbol of everlasting love and commitment. Understandably then, should a husband or wife lose their special band they would be very upset.

So when a man from the US discovered such a ring that had obviously been lost he felt it was only right that he seek out its owner, reports the Associated Press.

John Carney was getting rid of some waste at his local refuse centre in Deerfield, Massachusetts when he noticed a man's wedding ring half buried in the sand. After picking it up, he saw that it had been engraved with the words "Ed and Linda" and "June 9, 1996".

With a bit of shrewd detective work and the help of local librarians, Mr Carney discovered - via the town's wedding report for 1996 - that the lost band probably belonged to Ed LaCoille, who had wed a lady called Linda on the date inscribed on the ring.

Last week, he returned the ring to the couple - and found that not only had it been missing for six months, but this was the second time that it had slipped off Mr LaCoille's finger and been misplaced!

"I never expected to find it again," said Mrs LaCoille. "It was amazing."
