When January rolls into view, many people take the opportunity to look at their lives and assess the things that they consider to be in need of a change.

As such, the new year is often a time when warring couples decide that enough is enough and agree that it is time to work on their relationship. For others, it can be time to file for a divorce.

That is according to relationship coaches Susie and Otto Collins, who have conducted research which has indicated that more people decide to end a bad relationship after January 1st than any other time of the year.

The couple, co-authors of Should You Stay or Should You Go?, there are many reasons why couples decide to break up at the start of the new year.

For example, some people may want to "just get through the holidays" so as not to spoil Christmas or New Year's Eve for their family and friends.

Others may have feelings of despair that are magnified by the hope often associated with a new start, i.e. a new year, while some people find that old feelings resurface during the festive seasons and these "come to a head when life returns to normal in January".
