A man from Staffordshire was "incensed" that he had to give his former wife a divorce settlement worth more than £130,000 so he killed her with a screwdriver.

Former miner Harold Ingram repeatedly stabbed his spouse Diane in the neck and chest at her flat in Cannock in March this year, the day before he was due to give her £133,000.

The couple had been married for 38 years before Mrs Ingram left her partner in 2005.

Mr Ingram had managed to save a substantial amount of money but was extremely cautious with it. The day before he killed his estranged wife he sent a note telling his brother that he was "pig sick" at having to give her the sum so that she could pay her solicitors.

Following her death he lived in a soup kitchen for three months and spent just £130. He had £10,000 cash on him when he was arrested and he told police that his wife had spent too much money and that his marriage had been "38 years of robbery".

Mr Ingram, 63, denies murder. The trial continues.
