It's never too late to say 'I do'

A second marriage is a happy occasion at the best of times and for one couple in particular it will be truly momentous

A second marriage is a happy occasion at the best of times and for one couple in particular it will be truly momentous.

That is because Peggy Clark and James Mason have a combined age of 177 and when they exchange vows next month they will become the oldest newlyweds in Britain, the Guardian reports.

After meeting at their local day centre in Devon last month, the pair bonded when Ms Clark told Mr Mason that she was feeling lonely. They went to the seaside together and three days later they were engaged - at their age, they feel that time is precious so saw no sense in waiting!

They are planning to wed in front of 20 guests, including Mr Clark's grown up children, at the Palace Hotel in Paignton.

His 84-year-old future wife told the newspaper: "When you get a bit older you can read people a bit more. It's all in the eyes. His eyes really twinkle and I knew it was love."

"I was really sad before but now I'm always laughing. I was a bit worried in case anyone thought I was a gold digger - but I really love him. I'm glad because I've been on my own for 25 years."

Previously, the oldest married couple in the country were Raymond Robson, 96, and Faye Webber, 90, from Goring, Berkshire. Ms Webber passed away three months ago.
