An Egyptian man has told his wife that he wants a divorce via text message and now his estranged spouse has asked a court to verify whether this sort of declaration is legal.

Abul Nasr called his wife on her mobile phone and after she failed to answer he sent her an SMS which informed her of his desire to terminate their marriage.

Sharia (Islamic law) states that Muslim men do not need to approach a court to divorce their wives and instead only need to inform their partner of their intentions by stating their declaration three times.

According to state-run newspaper Al-Akhbar, Mr Nasr sent his wife three text messages, the last of which read: "I divorce you because you didn't answer your husband," the Agence-France Presse reports.

Should the court rule that his declaration is valid, this will be the first case of divorce by text message to be reported in Egypt.
