Festive season helps bring about divorce

Yesterday (January 7th) was 'D day' for many married couples as tensions spilled over from the festive season and they realised that they no longer wanted to be together.

The joy of Christmas and new year often serves to highlight problems in a trouble marriage and can result in an miserable spouse declaring that they want a fresh start and a divorce.

Jackie Walker, 42, decided that enough was enough after she failed to enjoy her family Christmas because of her unhappy marriage to husband Mike.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the mum-of-two revealed that despite the fact she had not been happy in her marriage for two years, it took the contrast of the supposed joy of Christmas with her sad personal life to make her realise what she has to do to make herself happy.

She explained: "Mike and I had been so busy with our careers, the children and renovating our rambling 15-room house that we had no time for each other. There were times I'd think, 'What the hell am I doing with him when I might as well be on my own?' I didn't feel loved or adored.

"But it was only at Christmas that I realised how wrong it would be to keep up the pretence for yet another year for the sake of my children. So I sat Mike down and told him, 'This isn't working for me. Our marriage is over'."
