A man who had separated from his wife flew into a jealous rage when he found her in bed with her new partner and hit his love rival over the head with a dumbbell.

Charles Dickinson used the iron bar of the weight to smack Kenneth Tasker when he found him together with his wife Lisa after arriving unannounced at the estranged couple's marital home in Tadworth.

It is thought that although the couple were going through a trial marital separation, Mr Dickenson had hoped for a reconciliation with Lisa, the Wimbledon Guardian reports.

Mr Dickenson, 37, left a deep gash in Mr Tasker's head and on Friday, November 25th he admitted a charge of grievous bodily harm at Guildford Crown Court.

Prosecutor Wendy Cottee told the court: "He lost his temper. He was shouting and ranting and raving at the victim who was trying to hide from him down the side of the bed.

"The defendant punched and kicked him all over the body and then hit him once or maybe twice with the metal pole."
