Emma Thompson regrets first marriage

British actress Emma Thompson believes that her first marriage to Kenneth Branagh should never have happened.

The 48-year-old married Branagh in 1989 and they were together for six years before they officially got a divorce. Thompson has revealed that she wishes she and her former spouse had thought more carefully about exchanging vows and asserted that had they gone through relationship counselling they would never have walked down the aisle.

The World Entertainment News Network quotes her as having said: "I wish that in our society we had more of a tradition of really preparing people for marriage.

"There's something to be said for preparation for any long journey. You've got to make sure that the boat is sturdy enough not to fall apart halfway across the water. I think if Kenneth and I had had counselling before we got married we might well have thought twice about it."

Academy award winner Thompson is now married to actor Greg Wise, with whom she has an eight-year-old daughter called Gaia Romilly.
