Divorce on the cards for French president?

French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Cecilia have ended their marriage and are going to file for a divorce, media reports suggest

French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Cecilia have ended their marriage and are going to file for a divorce, media reports suggest.

Next week, Sarkozy is due to pay a state visit to Morocco and his spokesmen revealed yesterday (Monday, October 15th) that in a break from the usual protocol for high-profile visits he will not be accompanied by the first lady, prompting speculation that the couple are going through a marital separation.

However, presidential spokesman David Martinon refused to reveal whether or not rumours that the pair, who have been married for 11 years, are going to divorce are true, the Agence France-Presse reports.

"I have no comment to make on this issue," he said, adding: "As far as I know, the wife of the president will not be on the trip". President Sarkozy is due to visit Morocco on October 22nd until October 23rd.

Sarkozy married Cecilia in 1996 and they have a son together, Louis. He has two other sons, Pierre and Jean, from his first marriage while his spouse has two daughters, Judith and Jeanne-Marie, from her first marriage.

In 2005 the couple separated for several months when Mrs Sarkozy went to stay in New York with an advertising executive.
