'Divorce is a very painful thing', says Macca

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has spoken out about his divorce from Heather Mills for the first time and revealed that the whole process has been very difficult.

The 65-year-old musician has revealed that going through a marital separation is like "going through hell". He failed to reach an agreement with his estranged wife during negotiations last week and it is now thought that the financial settlement could be the largest in British legal history.

Speaking to the Radio Times, he said: "Going through a divorce is a very painful thing. As Winston Churchill once said, 'If you're going through hell, keep going!' The only solution is to remain dignified."

However, Sir Paul added that although it has not been easy for him he has drawn strength from his children and from music, calling it his "therapy".

"I've a wonderful baby. She's a great joy to me, as are my elder children, so I'm a lucky man," he said. "It's been a difficult time. But music is a great healer. Music is the therapy for me. In fact, going through difficulties has only concentrated my desire to make good music."

McCartney married 39-year-old Ms Mills in 2002 and they have a three-year-old daughter, called Beatrice.
