Divorce 'hitting Henry's game'

Thierry Henry's recent divorce could be having an effect on his performance on the pitch, according to a former teammate

Thierry Henry's recent divorce could be having an effect on his performance on the pitch, according to a former teammate.

Villarreal player Robert Pires said during an interview with Radio Marca that the 29-year-old is a top class player, but factors surrounding his move from Arsenal to Barcelona could have taken their toll.

This includes his split from English wife Claire Merry, with whom he has a two-year-old daughter, which happened just days after the transfer.

"What happens is that when you change leagues you need some time to adapt," he said. "He also has the problem of his divorce and is being affected by it. Of course this is going to weigh him down and also he can't see his daughter."

Henry and his model wife were officially divorced in September after four years of marriage and the financial settlement is expected to be one of the largest faced by a footballer.

Despite all this, Pires added "I know him well and I'm sure he will shine for Barcelona". Henry finally scored his first goal for the Spanish team on Wednesday (September 19th), helping them achieve a 3-0 win over Lyon.
