A court office clerk from Miami has been charged with falsely offering couples "quickie divorces", it has been reported.

According to the Miami Herald, Olga L Avila, was arrested last Tuesday (January 15th) under suspicion of filing fraudulent paperwork on the behalf of four couples whom she had promised a rapid marital separation.

When the couples came to the court to enquire about getting a divorce, Ms Avila offered them a speedy split for $670, which she claimed was legal and cheaper than using a lawyer.

However, her services weren't actually legal at all, and proved more expensive than if the couples had filled in the paperwork themselves.

Ms Avila was fired from her job last July after her activities came to light and she has now been charged with "52 counts of fraud, unlawful compensation and other crimes".

Miami-Dade inspector general Chris Mazzella said that officers are searching for further evidence that other couples have been scammed.

He told the paper: "Our people are looking at many, many divorce files and many folders."
