The rate of divorce in Egypt is such that a third of marriages collapse after just one year, new data has indicated.

According to figures from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), courts in the north African country rule on 240 divorce cases every day and one couple files for a marital separation every six minutes, the Agence France-Presse reported yesterday (Tuesday, November 20th).

Egypt has a population of 76 million, of which 2.5 million women are divorced.

Muslim sharia law states that men are allowed to file for divorce, do not need to go to court to do so and can have up to four wives. However, women who want to separate from their husbands have to endure lengthy court procedures.

Earlier this week it was reported that an Egyptian woman has asked her husband for a divorce because he did not wash for the first two months of their marriage.
